RAY 2018

Extreme

24.05.–09.09.2018

Geographical and cultural boundaries are blurring as technology advances, suggesting a new era of global interconnectedness. The extreme is particularly well-suited to this trend development, owing to the boundless availability of digitally circulating information and images, which demand an economy of attention. The more extraordinary, unconventional, or marginal the subject, the greater the attention the images receive. The allure of the extreme has always been inextricably intertwined with photography. The extreme awakens the desire to capture the thrilling, the scandalous, the eccentric, and to make it visible for posterity. The resulting images serve as both evidence and a photographic expression of a fascination with the extraordinary. However, the point where the norm ends and deviation begins is subject to constant change. In thematically related exhibitions exploring various frontiers of the extreme, the selected artists used their photographic practice to reflect on social transformations, concepts of identity, and aesthetic trends in the 21st century.
