Ideologies

Kehrer Verlag

What lies behind ideologies? How do personal worldviews, fundamental attitudes, and political theories develop? How do they affect others? To what extent do they support power, manipulation, abuse, exclusion, and exploitation in diverse societies? The artists represented in this publication for the 4th International Triennial of Artistic Photography and Related Media in Frankfurt/Rhine-Main, such as Máté

Bartha, Johanna Diehl, Yves Sambu, Ja'Tovia Gary, and others, through their works, reveal the significance and impact of past and present ideologies. They demonstrate how ideology expresses itself in the past and in the here and now, and how it differs. Renowned authors further explore this topical issue in their essays.

Imagine Reality

Kehrer Verlag

How can and do we want to see the world today? How are new perspectives created through and in photography by means of alienation or the dissolution of everyday reality? Beyond the documentary, what do the visual languages look like with which artists reflect on the philosophical and existential aspects of human and material existence in our time? The RAY 2015 Photography Triennial presents these questions under the title IMAGINE REALITY, in a main exhibition and six smaller exhibitions.

Partner projects, comprising a total of 35 artists from 15 nations, present their visual explorations of subjective and staged realities. These lead into a world where reality and fiction, fact and illusion are inextricably intertwined, and to an expansion of the real. The photographic techniques employed are as diverse as the history of photography itself. The works on display reflect the transformation of the medium and point to the potential of a visible world.

Making History

Hatje Cantz

At the initiative of the Frankfurt Rhine-Main Cultural Fund, nine institutions from the region have joined forces for RAY Photography Projects Frankfurt/Rhine-Main to showcase outstanding international positions in contemporary photography and video art in the Rhine-Main area. The exhibition MAKING HISTORY is being held concurrently at three key locations: the Frankfurter Kunstverein, the MMK Museum of Modern Art Frankfurt.

On the Main River and at the MMK Zollamt. MAKING HISTORY presents works that explore the staging of reality through media images. The artists do not offer pre-packaged models of history, but rather reveal very different, subjective perspectives on historical events. The publication introduces approximately 38 of the featured artists, from Harun Farocki and Jeff Wall to Oliviero Toscani, and places them within their thematic context.
